The threads that helped weave together my current story can largely be traced back to my first few years in college, while I was living in Raleigh, North Carolina. It was there that I was pursuing an interest in technology—one I would eventually realize wasn’t sufficient on it’s own—as well as having started down the path of awakening. The most significant occurrences during that time had to do with meeting my future wife Emily, joining a college group called the Self Knowledge Symposium, beginning a daily meditation practice, and being introduced to the work of philosopher Ken Wilber (who provided a suitable framework to try and integrate these various strands of interest).
I dropped out of school toward the end of my time in North Carolina and began studying and meditating with most of my free time. I began, in earnest, the practice of insight meditation in 2003 and starting going on intensive retreats. This period was a time of new beginnings, of casting aside the status quo, and searching for a life of greater meaning and depth. Just after Emily graduated from school we decided to move to Boulder, Colorado. Once in the Rockies, I quickly sought out my favorite author, Ken Wilber, and landed a job with his non-profit company, Integral Institute. For a few years I helped manage one of their most popular media sites, Integral Naked (sweet name, huh?). During that few years I also finished my undergraduate degree at Naropa University, got married, and somehow managed to spend quite a bit more time practicing meditation, both on retreat and during my daily life. This three years in Boulder, during my early twenties, was a time of intense growth, excitement, and cold-ass winters.
For a short period of time after graduating, at the beginning of 2007, Emily and I did some traveling as well as attending a 2-month vipassana retreat out in California. I also helped, with a couple of friends, start a Buddhist podcast called Buddhist Geeks. For a brief time I thought that we might move back to North Carolina, and be closer to our families, but Boulder, and the momentum of our lives there, quickly lured us back.
For the past several months I have been working in Boulder, helping start a media company called Falling Fruit TV, serving as the Director of Technology. Again, it feels like a new phase, or stage, of life is unfolding. I’m now out of school, and attempting to find meaning and purpose within the world (not simply by trying to transcend it) and figuring out how all of my past experience might lend itself to something that can touch other human beings. Part of the mission of Falling Fruit is to “inform, empower, and connect world citizens who want to become effective agents of change.” If we are able to do that, then perhaps I’ll be able to make up for all the months I’ve spent sitting on my ass! Wish me luck…
